HMRC's computer software, Connect, has clearly demonstrated its value for money already and I expect it will be the platform for risk assessment within HMRC for the foreseeable future. Its ability to identify tax fraudsters and fraudulent patterns is certainly making life easier for HMRC tax inspectors and helping analysts focus on the most prevalent areas of risk. Like all things in this age of ever advancing information technology, it is comfortable to assume that Connect will develop even further, opening new avenues and areas of information gathering for HMRC which would have been unimaginable only a few years ago. This article explores the implications and considers what this powerful system could do in the future.
