There are three main categories of packaging (a) Transit (b) Storage (c) Point of sale (Advertising function) I know little about point-of-sale other than to say "Let the buyer beware". Have you ever opened the contents of what would seem to be a large bottle of soft drink only to be amazed at what a small glass it will only partially fill or the packet of cereals/soap powder and the like which have large voids of unfilled space within them? I speak as a consumer rather than as a packer. However, before progressing to other areas of packaging I must comment that without packaging and foodstuffs and other commodities, then distribution would not be possible let alone storage. It has frequently happened in the past that large stocks held in bulk have not been distributed to areas of great need, due to the lack of packaging, so often described as an unacceptable added cost. Packaging is essential, but the degree of usefulness is determined by the quality of the design.
