In many countries antibiotics and/or zinc are restricted in animal diets. The objective of this study was to determine the effects of a feed additive (NeoPrime®, Amlan International, Chicago, USA) on nursery pig performance and plasma and fecal endotoxin when added to a diet containing antibiotics (AB) and zinc oxide (ZnO) or when AB, ZnO, or the combination were removed. The product (NP) blend of activated mineral enterosorbent, inactive yeast and fermentation solubles, and an amino acid. After 3-d on a common diet, 180 pigs (28-d old; avg BW 6.8 ± 0.21 kg) were fed 5 treatments with 6 replications for 35 days. Treatments were: T1) corn-soybean meal-based diet + AB (75 g chlortetracycline and 100 g olaquindox/MT) and ZnO (3 kg/MT); T2) T1 + 0.15% NP; T3) T2 - AB 2; T4) T2 - ZnO; T5) T2 - AB - ZnO. Pigs had ad libitum access to feed and water. Pig weights, feed intake, and fecal samples were taken on d14 and d35; blood was drawn from one pig/pen. Fresh fecal samples were collected from each pen. A CRD, significance used was P < 0.05 using ANOVA in GLM. There was no difference (P > 0.05) for BW on d-14. On d-35 BW was higher (P < 0.05) for T4 than for T1 or T2, while T3 and T5 were not different than any treatment. Feed intake or FCR were not different (P > 0.05). Plasma and fecal endotoxins were generally lower (P < 0.05) when diets containing NP were fed. In this experiment, there was no difference in pig performance when NP was added to a diet containing AB and ZnO. Performance was maintained when NP was added and AB or AB + ZnO were removed from the diet Adding NP generally reduced plasma and fecal endotoxins.
