Exercise induced muscle soreness (MS) and fatigue reduces the usability of horses, and may be attributed to lactic acid accumulation, increased inflammation, and/or glycogen depletion. Recently, a proprietary blend of fenugreek and yucca schidigera, DigestaWell NRG (NRG), demonstrated reduced lactic acid accumulation, inflammation, and MS post-exercise in horses when offered as a dietary supplement. Additionally, these trials indicated an energy sparing effect of glycogen for fat as an energy source. A number of horses exhibiting MS may also have starch intolerance issues due to various metabolic diseases. Moreover, horse owners are increasingly aware of the glycemic and insulinemic response to feeds and dietary supplements; and thus, the objective of this trial was to elucidate the glycemic and insulinemic response of performance horses to NRG. Eight insulin sensitive performance horses (11.4 ± 4.3y) were assigned to either unsupplemented control (CON) or NRG (200g/d) top-dressed in a cross-over design for a 2wk period with 2wk washout. Blood samples were collected via venipuncture at 0, 30, 90, 150, 180, 210min. Plasma was analyzed for glucose and lactate concentration using a YSI, and insulin using an ELISA kit. AUC was calculated in PRISM, and PROC MIXED with repeated measures was used for statistical analysis. There was no effect of treatment*time interaction for lactate (P=0.59), glucose (P=0.91), or insulin (P=016), or treatment for lactate and glucose (P>0.05). Insulin trended towards difference (P=0.06; NRG:17.3 v. CON:13.6 ± 1.3uIU/mL) due to treatment, specifically at 90min post-supplementation (P=0.002; NRG:29.0 v. CON:18.9 ± 2.2uIU/mL). Additionally, there were no differences in glucose (P=0.67) or lactate (P=0.60) AUC; however, the insulin AUC trended towards difference (P=0.06; CON:3157.7 v. NRG:4298.1 ± 399.8). The results demonstrated that NRG does not impact the glycemic response, but may influence the insulinemic response. Further research is required to determine the effects of NRG on the glycemic and insulinemic responses of insulin resistant horses.
