Music-based interventions have been identified as a potential nonpharmacological intervention to address behavioral and psychological symptoms in older adults diagnosed with neurocognitive impairment. Current research supports the importance of utilizing customized music when providing these services. The Music and Memory Program, a non-profit whose goal is to improve quality of life for patients with dementia through the use of music, is a nationally-recognized organization that trains health care providers how to incorporate personalized music in their interactions with older adults with cognitive disorders. Providers on the Geriatric Psychiatry Unit at Edith Nourse Rogers Memorial VA Hospital have begun to implement this Music and Memory program for Veterans on that unit. This presentation will cover the development and implementation process of this program, as well share preliminary data on behavioral and psychiatric outcomes collected on Veterans enrolled in this program.
