Converting from Traditional File Structures to Database Management Systems: A Powerful Tool for Nursing Management

Traditional data file storage methods have limitations. The data must be accessed by a written software program, and any changes require modifications to the program. Data base management systems offer more flexibility to the users without requiring programming expertise. This paper describes one application for nursing management of changing from a traditional software program to a data base management system. Patient classification data, recommended staffing, and actual staffing data were accessed, statistical summaries prepared, and monthly summary reports were provided to nurse managers by using a database package. This method offered nursing management more flexibility, and a much desired enhancement to the original data and reports which were prepared from the purchased “canned” nurse staffing package.
