Children's Hospital Medical Center of Akron recognized a need to automate patient charging and generation of daily patient statistics within the Emergency Services in January, 1982. Utilizing certain given limitations, the design and programming of such a system was managed by the facility's Systems and Programming Department for processing on the hospital's mainframe computer.The design and implementation of the system is discussed and related to other systems currently in place in the Emergency Services Division.Results and benefits of the system are reviewed and examples are given to assist others in recognizing the impact of the system in terms of planning, marketing, research, and education.This article will provide ideas for design of similar systems which may be geared to individual needs and application as well as point out various methods of using the resultant data.
