Transportation of High Current Highly Charged Ion Beams

In recent years, there is an increasing requirement of high injection current and highly charged ion beams at many accelerator laboratories, such as CERN, GSI, GANIL, LBNL, INFN and IMP. This is a real challenge on beam transportation, especially when a super conducting ECR sources is employed.On one hand, the space charge effect becomes a major concern when the bearr current is as high as tens of mA. Usually, the space charge of ion is partially compensated to a high degree by electrons produced in the bombardment with residual gas and vacuum chamber, providing no electrode is involved in the beam
