20世纪30年代上半期，鲁迅、杨丙辰、朱光潜等文坛前辈对徐寄予温厚期许。30年代末，左翼作家巴人发动了以徐为靶心的“反个”文艺运动。40年代，民间对徐剧作与小说反响如潮，邵洵美、林徽因等自由作家表示认可徐，左翼作家对徐在批判中有所兼容。在以社会斗争实践为主潮的现代中国的任一时期里，作为思想型的独立作家，徐作品中深远的精神建构远未获得真正理解。在当下批评中也仍存有沿袭旧弊的现象，对于徐作品中的启蒙价值、超越性以及徐对抗战的贡献认识不足。%In the first half of the 20 th century, such literary predecessors as Lu Xun, Yang Bingchen and Zhu Guangqian had placed great hopes on Xu Xu. By the end of the 1930s, Ba Ren, a leftwing writer, was launching the‘anti-individualistic’literary movement with Xu Xu as the target. In the 1940s, positive responses to plays and fiction by Xu Xu reverberated like waves throughout the country and freelance writers such as Shao Xunmei and Lin Huiyin approved of Xu Xu whereas leftwing writers gave Xu Xu leeway even when they criticized him. In any period of modern China in which the practice of social struggle formed the mainstream, the profound spiritual construction of works by Xu Xu, an independent writer of free thinking, is far from being genuinely understood. And, in contemporary criticism, there are still traces of following the old in the past as there is insufficient recognition of the enlightening values and transcendence in Xu Xu’s work, as well as of his contribution to the Anti-Japanese War.
