邓小平认为，中国特色社会主义制度具有特色的原因，在于它深刻总结了我国以往社会主义制度建设的历史教训，符合当代中国国情，是中国特色社会主义实践的制度化提升。中国特色社会主义制度的特色主要体现在实行人民民主专政制度、人民代表大会制度、中国共产党领导的多党合作和政治协商制度、民族区域自治制度、“一国两制”，体现在实行公有制为主体多种所有制经济共同发展以及实行社会主义市场经济体制。进一步丰富中国特色社会主义制度的特色，要解放思想、事实求是，不照搬别国制度，坚持推进改革，汲取党和人民群众的集体智慧，吸收和借鉴人类制度文明成果。%Deng Xiaoping thought the reason for the features of the socialism with Chinese characteristics is that it profoundly summarizes the historical lessons of socialism construction in China. In line with contemporary China’s national conditions and being the inevitable product of the practice of socialism construction with Chinese characteristics, the socialism with Chinese characteristics is featured in the implementation of the system of people’s democratic dictatorship, the system of people’s congress, the leadership of the Communist Party of China’s multi-party cooperation and political consultation system, the system of regional ethnic autonomy, “one country two systems”, the public ownership as the main body of other economic sectors to supplement the ownership structure and the socialist market economic system. To maintain and develop the socialism with Chinese characteristics, we should emancipate our minds, seek truth from facts. We should adhere to the socialism with Chinese characteristics, but not copy foreign system. We should persevere in reform, draw the collective wisdom of the Party and the people, absorb and make use of the fruits of human civilization system.
