王晓德教授的专著《美国外交的奠基时代（1776-1860)》以专题形式系统研究了美国早期发展历程中发生的重大外交事件，深入分析了蕴藏在这些事件背后的思想根源。作为国内美国早期外交史研究方面的开荒之作，此书具有可圈可点的学术价值。中国的美国外交史取得了有目共睹的成绩，但还需要在多学科理论素养积累、多种外语掌握等方面深入加强，唯此才能使中国的美国外交史研究取得更大的创新，实现实质性的突破。%The book the Foundation Age of the American Diplomacy (1776-1860), written by professor Wang Xiaode, took systemic research of the major events in early American diplomatic history. And the monograph took in-depth analysis of the ideological roots of these events. As a pioneering work, it is of great academic value. Chinese cycle has achieved a lot in the research of American diplomatic history. But we have a long way to go in multidisciplinary theoretical knowledge accumulation and multi-language mastering. Only in the way can we make the research of the American diplomatic history more innovative and achieve substantive breakthrough.
