Based on the extended model of the Cobb-Douglas production function, using the panel data of 31 provinces (directed-controlled municipalities and autonomous regions) in mainland China from 2000 to 2014, this study explored the impact of the development tourism economy on technological progress in terms of the sample population as well as the spatial dimensions of the eastern, central and western regions. The results showed that:① for the sample population and the central region, technological progress had a significant positive impact on the development tourism economy, but institutional quality was the core force to promote the development tourism economy;② for the eastern region, technology progress had a significant positive impact on the development of tourism economy and was the main force driving the development of regional tourism economy;③ for the western region, the impact of technological progress on the tourism economy was not significant, and the institutional quality and accessibility were the main factors in promoting the development of tourism economy.
