Pragmatic Analysis of Vague Language in CNN Economic News from the Perspective of Adaptation Theory

摘要

Vagueness is a ubiquitous phenomenon in language use.Because of its flexibility and generality,vague language is used in CN N economic news widely.From the perspective of Verschueren''s adaptation theory,this paper collects ten economic news to conduct research and analyzes vague language from three aspects of adaptation theory.The result shows that adaptation to the mental world includes the readers''mental world and editors''mental world;adaptation to the physical world includes the time,space and other features of the physical world;adaptation to the social world includes the politeness and avoiding negative effect on society.
