Socio-spatial exclusion based on human activities and social networks in space-time: A case study of Koreans in Columbus, Ohio.

Previous efforts to evaluate the socio-spatial exclusion focus only on the economic aspects with census data, providing only one aspect of socio-spatial exclusion. The main problem of socio-spatial exclusion is the disconnection between social interaction with other people or the society, caused by spatial and temporal constraints. Social interactions can be revealed from investigating activities and social network. Social network analysis and space time analysis have strengths to investigate the multi-dimensional and procedural aspects of socio-spatial exclusion.; This dissertation examines the socio-spatial exclusion of Korean immigrants in Columbus Ohio MSA with four different visualization methods: (1) Kernel density estimation with social interaction values, (2) Concentrated circles with social networks, (3) 3D Space time paths, and (4) Time windows with social networks. The results show that combining social network approach and space time activity approach is an effective way for analyzing and understanding the socio-spatial exclusion.
