A control architecture for the computer-assisted control of multiple-link electrohydraulic machines such as excavators and front-shovels used in the mining and construction industries was previously developed and demonstrated at the University of Nevada, Reno (UNR). This system has previously only been tested and demonstrated with a small-scale excavator. This thesis investigates the feasibility of the application of this technology to larger pieces of similar equipment, specifically large front-shovels and excavators used in surface mining operations. In order to demonstrate the feasibility of this application, an installation plan for a Hitachi EX 3500 shovel has been developed, and the hardware required has been tested in a laboratory setting. Software modifications have also been made to allow compatibility with the larger equipment. It is projected that the application of this technology will make operation of these machines more intuitive and easier, and will, therefore, improve energy and time efficiency of loading operations. These benefits have been demonstrated in small-scale field testing.
