Leadership traits of African American senior level male executives in banking: A case study.

Banks are required to have a racially diverse staff and must satisfy diversity requirements and discrimination issues that require a bank's leadership to reflect the community bank services (Eagan & Bendick, 2001; Ely & Thomas, 2001; Jackson, 2002). This study used a qualitative case study research design. The objective of this research study was threefold, which was (a) to discover the leadership traits of African American male senior executives in the banking industry, (b) to identify or explore the perceived inhibiting factors that may have led to the under-representation of African American male senior executives in the banking industry, and (c) to explore the perceived motivating factors (enablers) that may have assisted African American male executives in reaching senior-level executive positions in the banking industry. Results from the study denoted characteristics that African American males aspiring to reach the senior executive levels in organizations should possess, should not possess, and should strive for and inhibitors that would prevent them from attaining senior level positions in the banking industry.
