Good citizens versus good actors: Exploring the motivational pathways of organizational citizenship behavior.

The present study sought to further understand both the antecedents and consequences of Organizational Citizenship Behaviors (OCBs) and related behaviors engaged in for "good citizen" (i.e., concern for others and the organization) and "good actor" (i.e., impression management) motives. Findings revealed that OCBs driven by "good citizen" motives are more likely to be engaged in by those agreeable, sentimental, sociable, hard-working individuals, and that OCBs engaged in for these motives have only limited effects on other-ratings of OCB. On the other hand, "good actor" behaviors (impression management motivated behaviors) appear to be more likely to be engaged in by dishonest, insincere individuals. These behaviors can also influence co-worker and supervisor ratings of OCB, although findings were limited. Implications of these findings and directions for future research in the area of OCB motivation are discussed.
