Control of outsourced manufacturing process and identification of best practices to ensure product quality.

Offshore outsourcing, the exporting of work from developed countries to other areas of the world, has become an increasingly popular option. However, many of the intricacies of outsourcing are still not well understood. Establishing a set of best practices to facilitate the transition to outsourcing, especially for small and medium size companies, is critical. The primary purpose of this study is to identify best practices for smaller American manufacturers and offer insights on how to apply them. This study identifies the problems that inhibit effective management control especially with regard to the issues most pertinent to quality professionals. With proper planning, financial losses associated with outsourcing can be avoided. Experienced and novice quality professionals can reduce their exposure to failure in these areas by applying some of Deming's fourteen points and employing other planning techniques. The chief outcome is a plan do study act (PDSA) chart of best practices.
