There are two major approaches to media literacy: (1) the protectionist, or interventionist approach; and (2) the critical pedagogical or cultural studies approach, each which perceives and presents media literacy a bit differently. This paper is a theoretical investigation into each approach separately, with a focus on theories of media effects in the interventionist approach and critical theory and cultural studies theories in the other. It will discuss the critique, praise, and case studies of each approach. It will finally propose that the best approach to media literacy is a combination of each of these and by putting the two together and integrating them into every classroom, education itself could be transformed into something more democratic and participatory for all.
