The 'epic parable' in Bertolt Brecht's 'Der gute Mensch von Sezuan'.

Starting from a note by Bertolt Brecht this master thesis attempts to analyze Brecht's use of the parable form and of its main feature impropriety in his play Der gute Mensch von Sezuan. In this note, he sees impropriety as the easiest form of alienation in order to destroy the improper consciousness of the audience. With the reference to the terminology by Adolf Julicher and Rudiger Zymner describing the parable form, it appears that Brecht follows the structure of the educational parable of the Enlightenment using a stereo-metric and simplified scene structure. But he reacts to the changing societal environment throughout history by adjusting and combining this particular parable form with elements of his own theatre form. By including an anti-moral, double-alienation as well as his elements of epic theatre, such as Verfremdungseffekte, music and lyrics, Brecht enriches the genre of the parable with another unique form: the "epic" parable.
