Incentivized Decisions in the U.S. Air Force: Stepping Back to Look at the Big Picture.

Decision makers in the U.S. military face a complex set of restrictions that often force ad hoc analyses and solutions. Our approach is to model the current policies, identify the root cause of inefficiencies, and then provide simple and transparent solutions that directly address those issues. By systematically analyzing the structure of common problems, we discover the underlying inefficiencies that result from many applications of these ad hoc policies and develop methodologies that can be employed "off-the-shelf." Approaches from mechanism design, statistics, game theory, and, dimensional analysis are all used for different applications of real world military problems. We specifically address known issues in military acquisitions, retention bonus programs, and categorical comparisons using additive value modeling. The results provide the military decision maker with tools to understand problems in a timely manner and produce more comprehensive solutions.
