Risk factors, clinical presentation & outcomes of perioperative myocardial infarction in elderly following hip fracture surgery.

Perioperative myocardial infarction (PMI) has higher mortality in the aged1,2 but the elderly are significantly underrepresented in major clinical trials and published literature. Among elderly, there is increased need for various surgical procedures especially orthopedic surgical procedures. Among orthopedic surgical procedures, hip fracture surgery is the most common surgery performed in the elderly population. Although, hip fracture repair surgery is classified as intermediate risk surgery with estimated perioperative cardiovascular adverse events less than 5%, but these events have been reported to be much higher in the elderly population undergoing hip fracture surgery.
