Cormac McCarthy's novels Blood Meridian and No Country for Old Men teach us the hazard of subscribing to notions of fate and destiny, for resignation to the belief that all events are predetermined is tantamount to a denial of human will and moral choice. Such denial absolves human beings of responsibility for the evil which they are capable of perpetrating in the world, and the resultant lack of compunction facilitates the occurrence of further misdeeds.
