This thesis applies a new approach to the diagnosis of transmission line faults in an electric power system, where a phasor measurement unit (PMU) is assumed to be available at the high voltage side of every terminal of a generation unit. The goal is to produce diagnosis outcomes that are immune to protection misoperations at a speed required of protection functions. This goal is achieved by several innovations. First, input waveform samples of phasor measurement units are used to diagnose transmis- sion line faults, and to track the generator internal voltage waveforms. Second, by pairing the PMUs, the electric transmission network is partitioned into subnetworks between each pair. As a result, the dimensions of the multiple lter design models for the diagnosis lter banks are signicantly reduced, making our diagnosis approach scalable to large power systems. All the results reported here are illustrated through the WSCC 9-bus test system.
