Chinese contemporary artists received little attention from the international art market before 2007, the year when works by Chinese contemporary artists achieved high prices in Sotheby's the sales room. At present, much research has been conducted on the skyrocketing prices of Chinese contemporary artworks and the success of established Chinese contemporary artists. However, few scholars have paid attention to emerging Chinese contemporary artists, and little research has been conducted on the market of their works. To close this academic gap, this study analyzes how emerging Chinese contemporary artists performed in the secondary market from 2007 to 2014. To provide a thorough understanding of the market for works by emerging Chinese contemporary artists, this paper also puts forward a new definition for Chinese emerging artists based on Chinese collectors' consumption behavior, selects case study examples according to this definition, analyzes market performance of selected artists according to their auction records and proposes a general standard for investing in artworks by Chinese emerging artists.
