Implementation of the WHO's ICF in the selection of assessment and treatment in an individual with dysarthia post-TBI.

The purpose of the current study is to apply the World Health Organization's International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) to a case of a young adult exhibiting dysarthria post acquired brain injury. The WHO model was applied to a speech-language pathology process of determining assessment procedures, goals, and treatment program. This study implemented qualitative questionnaires and interviews along with quantitative data to participants and family/friends. A control participant, matched for age, gender, language and geographic region was included. Results indicated improvement in self-reported measures of communicative ability and in measure of expiratory breath control. Family data did not corroborate change, but their initial information was vital to the process. The WHO's ICF application to selection of assessment and treatment material for speech language pathologists can help focus on individual communicative needs.
