APPLICATION OF DATABASE MANAGEMENT TECHNOLOGY TO PROCESS ENGINEERING.

This dissertation applies database management technology to process engineering by (1) Identifying features needed by an engineering database management system. (2) Implementing a prototype engineering database management system--CADRE 1.0. (3) Developing a conceptual data model for interfacing CADRE to many process engineering computer programs.;An extensive literature survey investigated DBMS. Detailed tables compare CADRE 1.0 and eleven commercial products with an ideal engineering DBMS.;A conceptual data model applies CADRE to the process engineering areas of: physical properties, process simulation, equipment design, equipment costing, and process economics.;Existing database management systems (DBMS) are designed for business applications and are not suitable for engineering. CADRE is a relational DBMS that is tailored to engineering and science. An engineering DBMS emphasizes simplicity, robust commands, a sound application program interface, data integrity, many data types, data sharing, security, and support for a wide variety of hardware and operating systems.
