An applied systems approach to arctic route geotechnical engineering is presented. Route characterization and analysis are emphasized from a preconstruction perspective. Although generally applicable, the methodology is directed to large-scale linear facilities traversing geotechnically variable terrain.;Past route geotechnical engineering practice is summarized. Landform-based terrain analysis is conceptually presented. Geotechnical program development, route characterization, analysis and design processes are identified and discussed. An integrative systems framework is defined. Criteria and direction for system development and application are identified. General geotechnical Bayesian updating is developed, with concentration on using landform information as prior data. Analytical probability analysis models are developed for: (1) thaw strain, (2) thaw depth, (3) thaw settlement, (4) thaw plug stability factor of safety and reliability, and (5) differential thaw settlement. An effective stress soil shear strength model for thawed silty permafrost based on correlation with frozen dry density is identified. Several numerical examples are used to illustrate analytical models. An illustrative integrated design application to a road/pipeline transportation system is presented. Discussion of philosophical and psychological factors affecting the route geotechnical systems approach is included.
