Two capillary chromatographic techniques were used to analyze polycyclic aromatic compounds (PAC) from environmental samples. Gas chromatography (GC) was used to identify PAC isolated from a polluted river sediment. The genotoxic contribution of the PAC was determined to be due to those PAC with 4 and 5 aromatic rings. The 4 and 5 ring nitrogen heterocycles were also genotoxic.; Supercritical fluid chromatography (SFC) was used to chromatograph nitro-containing PAC in fractions of a diesel particulate extract. Some of these compounds were not amenable to GC. A nitro-selective detector showed good sensitivity, linearity, and stability under SFC conditions for the analysis of these compounds. Carbon dioxide as the mobile phase using density programming succeeded in separating mixtures of standard compounds as well as a polar fraction from a diesel particulate. Unique selectivities for these compounds were observed using three stationary phases: 50% n-octyl-, 5% phenyl-, and 26% biphenylpolysiloxanes. By comparison with retention of standard compounds, hydroxynitropyrenes and hydroxynitrofluorene were identified in the diesel particulate.
