INTERNATIONAL MARRIAGE: A FOCUS ON JAPANESE-AMERICAN MARRIAGE AND FAMILIES.

This dissertation explores marriage between American Defense Department workers and Japanese nationals. The dissertation is intended to assist American Defense Department workers contemplating marriage to a Japanese national and any foreign national in general. Conversation summaries of Americans married to Japanese nationals are presented in the appendix for the general interest of the reader. The American males in the summaries represented officers, enlisted men, and civilians from clerks to GS 11. The greatest value of the interview summaries is that they are done with candor and attention to detail. There is another appendix with summaries of two interviews of American Service members married to other Asian nationals, these are Philippine and Korean nationals. These summaries are provided so that the reader can contrast conversations. A third appendix presents an idea of what it is like to live in Japan. This is included since many of those men who marry spend much time living in Japan after marriage. Ideas and viewpoints expressed in this project, where not specifically cited, are those of the writer based on 12 years of life experience residing in Japan. This writer has had extensive contact with Americans married to Japanese and other Asian nationals. Since some of this project is based on life experience the viewpoints are not based on research nor do they necessarily reflect the opinions of the resource committee. Explanations for specialized terms are provided.
