Cholesterol serum levels and dietary intake of persons on maintenance hemodialysis

The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between total serum cholesterol and dietary factors known to influence serum cholesterol levels of 44 patients receiving hemodialysis at one center in Central Florida. Serum cholesterol, health parameters, and demographics were obtained from the medical records. Six individual sessions with each subject were conducted during which subjects were asked to recall their dietary intake from the previous day. No statistically significant correlation was found between serum cholesterol and dietary intake as hypothesized. Inverse relationships between serum cholesterol and dietary fats (r = $-$.30, p =.0509) and between serum cholesterol and dietary cholesterol (r = $-$.39, p =.0095) were found. Statistically significant correlations were found between gender and serum cholesterol (r =.47, p =.0013) and between high blood pressure and dietary cholesterol (r =.37, p =.0131). In comparison to all subjects there was a higher intake of dietary fats in black subjects and a lower fiber intake in older subjects.
