A method for quantitatively determining chlorinated pesticide residues on the surfaces of fresh produce was developed. The complete method was used to evaluate a preparative washing technique that is intended to reduce surface pesticide residues on fresh produce. Several types of produce were surface contaminated with a mixture of thirteen chlorinated pesticides. Produce were either washed with a nonionic surfactant or left unwashed prior to analysis. Analyses were performed by electron capture gas chromatography. Data reduction compared washed and unwashed commodities with respect to pesticide and produce types. The practical value of this experiment as a means of reducing pesticide contaminants on produce was also considered.
