China's urban-economic regions: Spatial structures, functional patterns and territorial organization problems of development.

In this study China's spatial economy and territorial development problems were comprehensively investigated. This task is approached through studying China's urban-economic regional system, its historical background, spatial structures, economic properties, functional patterns and relative territorial organization problems of development. A series of statistical methods were used and a statistical model was designed to demarcate the geographical boundaries of China's urban-economic regions. In addition, to analyze the basic economic structures and spatial patterns of the main urban-economic regions, Location Quotients, the Martin-Gibbs index and Lorenz Curve were used.;Through the investigation of the theoretical background, historical development and recent dynamics of China's urban and regional systems, the concept of urban-economic region was defined and studied. On the basis of the demarcation of the urban-economic regions, the economic characteristics and functional patterns of seven 1st-grade urban-economic regions of China were examined in depth. According to the basic framework of the urban-economic region as a territorial system, the most important problems of the spatial economy of contemporary China, such as disequilibrium and equilibrium of development, centralization and decentralization, industrialization and urbanization, large cities and medium and small-sized cities and towns, structural diversification and functional specialization, were discussed.;The analysis and study of China's urban-economic regional system, its spatial structure, functional patterns and territorial organization problems of development, may lead to a better understanding of national economic development and provide a theoretical base for a better strategy of urban development and regional planning.
