A method has been developed for the determination of permeation characteristics of glove materials by homogeneous solids. An initial method was developed which modified the standard test method (ASTM F739) for protective clothing versus liquids or gases, and modified for the determination of permeation characteristics of glove materials versus hazardous organic solids. After the system was evaluated, variations of the initial method were developed to study the effects of temperature and physiological saline on the permeation characteristics of the glove materials. These effects, which simulate glove use, altered the permeation characteristics of the membranes studied.; Method development consisted of evaluating many liquid methods for their advantages and disadvantages in evaluation of permeation characteristics, then utilizing the advantages and adapting them for solid application. The solid method includes a compact and sturdy cell design, a completely automated and computerized data acquisition system and a highly sensitive detection system.; Since little or no work has been done with the permeation of solids through protective glove materials, comparisons to previous solid work were limited. In most cases, the observed behavior of membrane permeation was adequately described by permeation and diffusion theory. Deviations from these theories were due to permeant/polymer, and polymer-permeant/collection medium. The results within each experiment were very reproducible.
