reshwater cyanobacteria are known to produce a family of at least 50 cyclic hepatotoxins called microcystin (MCYST). Microcystin-LR (MCLR), the most commonly reported potent MCYST, was frequently found in three drinking water supply lakes (Little Beaver, Driedmeat, and Coal) in Alberta from 1991-1993. Two genera of cyanobacteria found in these lakes, Microcystis and Anabaena, were reported to produce MCLR.
