The sorption and transport of acetone in a glassy liquid crystalline random copolyester, composed of 40 mole percent p-hydroxybenzoic acid and 30 mole percent each of p-hydroquinone and isophthalic acid (HIQ-40), were characterized as a function of annealing temperature. HIQ-40 can be prepared as isotropic, disordered, and amorphous films from solution. Subsequent annealing at various temperatures between ambient and 330;The structural reorganization occurring in HIQ-40 as a function of thermal annealing is accompanied by a 70;These fundamental studies in HIQ-40 have allowed a determination of the effect of liquid crystalline order per se on the sorption and transport properties of small molecules in an LCP barrier polymer. Additionally, these studies expand the growing knowledge base of LCP structural modifications which contribute to the rational tailoring of high barrier polymers based on these materials.
