The aim of this research is to design a novel family of power converters based on an unusual series connection made on the primary side of the rectifier transformer.;The main advantage of this peculiar connection is that, with a suitable arrangement of the windings of the power transformer, an even and natural current sharing amongst semiconductors is achieved. Forced sharing means such as interphase transformers are eliminated. Thus, the new converters are specially suited for high current applications.;In order to validate these new converters, the software EMTP (Electromagnetic Transients Program) has been used. The first stage of this research presents a procedure to prepare the data files used in their simulation.;In a second stage, the branch of the family that uses transformers connected in wye-delta shapes is presented. This part consists of: showing the theory of the series connection on the primary side; the design of several structures with pulse number multiple of six; the analysis of the performance of the Graetz rectifier bridge as well as of the double star circuit and the analysis of effects produced by grounding the primary circuit of the rectifier transformer.;In the third stage, the branch of the family that uses transformers connected in T shapes is designed. Symmetrical as well as asymmetrical zigzag connections for T transformers are shown. Moreover, these connections are proved to be useful in the new converters family and present as an alternative for the wye-delta topologie.;Finally, this work heralds the use of a new generation of high current converters.
