Romantiki O/S - networking operating system for limited memory embedded devices.

The TCP/IP network interface is considered a "luxury" feature in embedded devices because it is expensive to implement. It requires high-end hardware and complex operating systems to enable the device to be accessible on LAN and Internet. Implementing TCP/IP in limited memory microcontrollers is usually done by using superloop architecture which is hard to debug, maintain and extend.We compare Romantiki with another widely used OS (FreeRTOS) by running two application benchmarks. Our results show that programs running on Romantiki use much less memory and have slightly better performance.This thesis presents an operating system Romantiki with integrated TCP/IP stack. It combines memory efficiency comparable to superloops with easy to write coding style of multithreaded operating systems. This approach paves the way to have complex devices running standard TCP/IP applications on inexpensive and energy efficient hardware. It also allows sharing the same codebase between Romantiki and other multithreaded operating systems.
