The effect of two chemical thinners on fruit length, fruit diameter, fruit length to diameter ratio, fruit weight, fruit set, and fruit quality attributes, fruit pH, firmness, Hunter color, and soluble solid content, was demonstrate in 1997 on three apple cultivars: "Empire", "Jon-A-Red", and "Braeburn". The chemicals and treatments evaluated were: carbaryl at 0.05%, 0.1%, 0.2%, and accel at 25ppm, 50ppm, and 75ppm, and hand thinning, which was used as control.;Carbaryl and accel produced a high percent fruit set compared to hand thinning. Yield (total fruit weight per tree), soluble solid contents, fruit pH, Hunter color, soluble solid content, and percent fruit red color were increased by carbaryl and accel of moderate to high concentrations. Carbaryl and accel also affected fruit length, and fruit length to diameter ratio to different concentrations. However, carbaryl just to moderate concentration influenced on fruit diameter and firmness while that accel had no effect on fruit diameter and fruit firmness to none concentration.;"Jon-A-Red" shows the best performance compared "Braeburn" and "Empire" with carbaryl and "Braeburn" when compared "Jon-A-Red" or "Empire" with accel. The latest cultivar presented most susceptibility to diseases problems.
