Leadership is inspiring people to want to do something. Managing is controlling people through the use of reward and coercion. Leaders lead by having a congruence of values with their followers, having mutual trust with their followers, and having a shared and accepted goal or vision based on shared values with their followers. Thus, there are differences between leadership and management. However, is there a difference in outcomes if a group is lead or managed?This research suggests that there is a very important difference between organizations that are led and those that are managed. By performing a longitudinal study of productivity between similar line crews doing the same type of work, this research indicated that line crews that are led are at least 36% more productive than similar crews that are managed. The greatest difference between the line crews that were led and those that were managed was over 600%. This is a very significant difference between management and leadership.
