Prince (M.S. thesis, Clemson University, 1993) identified the inhibitory substance produced by Propionibacterium jensenii B1264 as a bacteriocin based on its proteinaceous nature, narrow inhibitory spectrum and bactericidal action. The main objectives of this research were to further purify and characterize and to investigate a possible application for the responsible agent jenseniin P.;Jenseniin P was optimally concentrated by ammonium sulfate precipitation at 70% saturation. Ammonium sulfate-concentrated, dialyzed jenseniin P was stable to NaCl (0.1 M-1.0 M), SDS (0.1%-2.0%), urea (4 M); 100;P. acnes is a major etiological agent of acne, which affects 17 million people in the USA. Jenseniin P was examined for inhibition of P. acnes and other cutaneous propionibacteria. Cultures were isolated from at least 2 homogenized comedones per patient (15 patients) and identified by biochemical profiles and fatty acid analysis. Jenseniin P inhibited 5 reference cultures and all 150 of 150 clinical isolates. Inhibition of cutaneous propionibacteria by a bacteriocin from a dairy species suggests its potential role in treating acne. This is the first report of a dairy propionibacteria bacteriocin with anti-acne activity.
