Renovating tourism, Jamaican style.

To what extent can a contextual architecture mitigate social and cultural frictions?;In recent years, the Jamaican economy has come to depend on the tourist trade as a key source of revenue. Local economies have likewise flourished because of a strong tourist presence, and many Jamaicans have flocked to these areas to make a living. 1981 saw the emergence and subsequent rise to popularity of a new type of tourism, one which threatens to destroy the symbiotic relationship which exists between tourists and local communities. The social, psychological, and economic repercussions are enormous, and have potentially catastrophic consequences for Jamaican and touristic societies alike.;This thesis sets out to analyse and address these very real issues, which affect similar societies the world over, in order that tourism might make more significant contribution to local communities, and vice versa.
