The objective of this investigation was to evaluate four different filtration media for their ability to trap Chemically Emulsified Oil (CEO) and Total Suspended Solids (TSS). The need for this study was realized due to the inability of the wastewater treatment plant at Coastal Oilspill Simulation System (COSS) to remove CEO and TSS and be in compliance with Texas Natural Resource Conservation Commission (TNRCC). To accomplish this objective, a bench scale filtration apparatus was designed and constructed. Samples collected during the research were analyzed for TSS, Fluorescence, and Particle Size Distribution. Parameters measured during this study were flow rate, pressure increase, and media performance. 80% of CEO was removed and a final average TSS concentration of 40 mg/L was achieved using a combination of Mixed Media (coarse sand, anthracite and gamet), PM-100RTM (anthracite and clay), and activated carbon. Results demonstrated the efficiency of the filtration media in the removal of CEO and TSS. The correct combination of filtration media could reduce CEO and TSS from the wastewater at COSS to levels which meet TNRCC guidelines.
