Self-limitation in risk society: A solution for the crisis of labour, environment and modernity (Dutch text).

The thesis explores alternatives for the crisis on the labour market, recognising the strong link with the ecological crisis. Both are so crucial, that they are part of the crisis of modernity. The starting point of the exploration is Ulrich Beck's theory of risk society. Three risk clusters are highlighted: socio-economic risks (risk on poverty, unemployment, social exclusion), ecological risks and individualisation risks (chapter 2).; In order to tackle the problems in risk society, we build upon the concept of reflexive modernisation, as developed by Giddens and Beck (chapter 3).; We can only find sustainable solutions for the crisis on the labour market if we recognise the problematic concept of endless needs as it has become common in capitalism. The way we deal with (economic) needs is the crucial aspect in chapter 5. The rise of post-material values indicates the existence of new needs. In this chapter an overview and analysis of the different arguments for self-limitation is offered. Self-limitation should not (solely) be considered as a moral appeal, but as a challenge to change the main institutions in society in order to support people looking for a less hectic life.; In chapters 6 and 7 this analysis is confronted with actual labour market policies and with possible alternatives. A reduction of the time spend on the formal labour market and the introduction of a basic income are considered as sustainable alternatives.
