In the field of wireless network security there exist many scenarios that require the network administrator to carefully consider the best course of action, to be taken against an unauthorized user. In these cases it is important to have real time information, such as the location of the malicious client, in a form that can be clearly understood by the wireless network administrator, so that judgment can effectively be used to resolve the situation. If the wireless network administrator can visualize the location of an unauthorized user in a wireless environment then a more informed decision can be made, or if it is necessary to collect more information on the unauthorized user's intent to the network or to apprehend the user before any data can be compromised. A Visualization and Mapping System (VMS) for use in a localization and tracking system, using directional antenna arrays in an indoor wireless 802.11g environment, was developed. The Visualization and Mapping System accounts for the analysis of time and location based information to the Network Administrator. It requires the coordinates of each antenna, the Received Signal Strength Intensity from each antenna and the orientation of the pan device (in degrees) which allows the directional antenna to turn. Once this information is received, the Central Analysis Subsystem decomposes this data into manageable information components, for further analysis. The information is then sent to the Mapping and Overlay subsystem to be rendered on a map. The user can adjust some visualization and mapping aspect by way of the End Client Subsystem. The system has been verified with three various test, more than 500 antenna measurements. The VMS was accurate 6.5 times out of 10 within 30 feet.
