This study was an examination of the responses of subjects to an instrument presented on-line and in a printed format. The author developed a web site for experimentation with different kinds of survey instruments for the Internet. The purpose this study was to determine if there were different responses and psychometric qualities in the two formats of a Likert-type scale according to different methods of response. For the on-line survey the respondent accessed an Internet-based web site and used a computer mouse to select the appropriate responses. In the paper format, responses were recorded with a pencil. No differences were found in the responses between the two forms of surveys and there were no differences in the psychometric qualities of the survey. Several recommendations for future research were made with implications for the changing nature of survey research because of advances in telecommunications and Internet technology.
