This research establishes a direct link between the determination of the production rate of a product and the geometric attributes and complexity, materials and corresponding manufacturing processes, and the anticipated resource allocations and capabilities of the production system for each component of the product. It also develops methods that identify those resources and components that limit the production rate, and then quantifies the effect that each of these resources and components have on the production rate.;The methodology presented herein provides a means for determining whether or not a specific product embodiment can meet production requirements. At this stage in the product realization processes the product information exists only as sketches. Information about the product consists primarily of the following: (1) the configuration of the functional modules with respect to each other; (2) rough sketches of the geometry of the components comprising each functional module; and (3) initial selections of materials, manufacturing processes, assembly operations, and sources for any subcontracted or standard components.;For the example selected it is shown that the methodology indicates that one can increase the production rate by 100% by modifying either (i) the thickness of one component and manufacturing scheme of two other components, or (ii) the manufacturing scheme of just three components out of the 20 components in the product.
