Molecular investigations of infertile men of oligospermia and their sons conceived by ICSI.

Artificial isemination technique can help some oligospermic infertile males have their own children. However, at the same time, a concern of whether this technique could create unhealthy babies with genetic defects was raised. The objective of this project was to investigate whether artificial isemination, such as ICSI (Entra-Cytoplasmic Sperm Injection) can cause genetic defects, such as chromosome deletions in male babies who are conceived from this process. By using PCR (polymerase chain reaction) strategy, 184 infertile men and their sons conceived by ICSI were screened with 25 Y-chromosome specific genetic markers for Y-chromosome deletions. The results obtained from this study showed deletions in ten patients but there was not a distinct relationship between genotype and expected phenotype. The role of analyses of Y-chromosome microdeletions in evaluating men with infertility remains to be determined.
