Aspects of the speech of Cantabria (Spain): Study and synchronic analysis of the semantic field TIME AND WEATHER based on maps published in the 'Linguistic and Ethnographic Atlas of Cantabria' (Spanish text).

The main objectives of this dissertation are: describe synchronically the most notable linguistic elements in the maps included in the semantic field TIME AND WEATHER in the “Linguistic and Ethnographic Atlas of Cantabria” [Atlas lingüisticoy etnográfico de Cantabria], the primary resource for the data collection; delineate zones of use; calculate indices of leveling of lexical processes, and offer possible connections and associations with the speech in other regions of Spain.; My focus is the description of the current state of the speech from various linguistic perspectives, with the objective of establishing a base to continue phonetic, (morpho)syntactic and lexical investigations in the remaining semantic fields in the atlas.; Part I of the study is the Orientation, including objectives; geographic demographic data; division of the province of Santander into geographic zones, interview locations, political and diocesan boundaries; and general historical and linguistic contexts of Cantabria.; Part II presents the structure, methodology and results of the study, plus information about the interview process and characteristics of the informants. It includes the interpretation of the results of the study of distinctive features; (morpho)syntactic variation; semantics; leveling of lexical processes; and comparison of the ALECant with the atlases of Andalucía (ALEA), of Aragon, Navarra and Rioja ( ALEANR), of the Canary islands (ALEICan), as well as with relevant sections of the “Mariners' Lexicon of the Iberian Peninsula” (Léxico de los marineros peninsulares) and Volume I of the “Linguistic Atlas of the Iberian Peninsula” ( Atlas lingüístico de la Península Ibérica (ALPI)]. I included, without interpretation, ethnographic information about the work performed in each month of the year. The indices of leveling classify the words that appear between 40% and 50% of the time in a map; predominant words (51%–75%), dominant words (76%–99%) and synchretism (100%).; Part III summarizes the study and points of major interest (such as uncommon words, metaphors, idiomatic expressions, ecclesiastical words, etc.), establishes zones of use of the forms and offers conclusions.; The data in the 11 Appendices provide the point of departure for the study, utilizing maps, charts and tables in addition to semantic discussion.
