The purpose of respiratory magnetic plethysmography (RMP) was to non-invasively measure tidal volume and to serve as an apnea detector in infant subjects, for sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) detection. RMP was compared to respiratory inductive plethysmography (RIP), which is the current standard non-invasive respiratory sensor on the market. The current design led to a stable and accurate method of measuring tidal volume in infants, while allowing for a less cumbersome design than current technologies. Initial experiments in adult subjects have shown that RMP gives accurate and stable results when compared to simultaneous spirometer measurements. Testing on the accuracy and linearity of the device has shown good results when compared to current technologies such as the respiratory inductive plethysmograph. The inexpensive design and stable circuitry of RMP gave equal if not better results when compared to RIP as not only a non-invasive respiratory sensor, but also as an apnea detector.
